OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced plans to open its first office in India by the end of 2025. The new office will be located in New Delhi, according to Jake Wilczynski, Head of Communications for APAC. This marks a significant milestone in OpenAI’s global expansion, highlighting India’s growing role in the artificial intelligence ecosystem.
The company has already set up a local entity and formed a hiring team that will focus on building partnerships with governments, businesses, developers, and academic institutions. With India emerging as a hub for technology talent, OpenAI aims to strengthen collaborations that can accelerate AI innovation and adoption across sectors.
CEO Sam Altman emphasized that India has all the right ingredients to become a global leader in AI — from its strong pool of engineers and world-class developer ecosystem to government support through initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission.
India is already OpenAI’s second-largest market globally in terms of ChatGPT usage, making this move both strategic and timely. The office is expected to play a vital role in advancing AI adoption in India while fostering local talent and innovation.
