A significant fire erupted at the Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility in Monterey County, California, on Thursday, January 16, 2025. The facility, owned by Vistra Corp., is one of the world’s largest battery power plants, housing thousands of lithium-ion batteries crucial for renewable energy storage.

The fire began around 3 p.m. local time, producing substantial toxic smoke. In response, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation orders for approximately 1,500 residents in the surrounding areas and closed sections of Highway 1. Health officials advised residents to stay indoors and shut ventilation systems to avoid inhaling hazardous fumes.

Firefighters have opted to let the fire burn out naturally due to the challenges associated with extinguishing lithium-ion battery fires, which can burn uncontrollably for extended periods. As of the latest reports, the fire has not spread beyond the facility, and no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

This incident follows previous fires at the Moss Landing facility, including a malfunctioning sprinkler system in 2021 and another fire in 2022. Vistra Corp. has stated that their top priority is the safety of the community and their personnel, and they plan to investigate the cause once the fire is extinguished.
